FIU recognized as one of the best colleges to work for

FIU is the only university in the United States this year to receive honor roll with recognition in all 12 categories of The Chronicle of Higher Education’s annual report, making it one of the best colleges to work for.

One of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country, The Chronicle’s 2017 Great Colleges to Work For recognized FIU in the following categories: Collaborative Governance, Compensation & Benefits, Confidence in Senior Leadership, Diversity, Facilities, Workspace & Security, Job Satisfaction, Professional/Career-Development Programs, Respect & Appreciation, Supervisor or Department-Chair Relationship, Teaching Environment, Tenure Clarity & Process, and Work/Life Balance.

This is not the first time FIU has received Honor Roll by the organization, Jaffus Hardrick, the vice provost for student access and success said to Panther Press, but this is the first time the university achieved recognition in all categories.

And the report’s result, he said, gives the school immense credibility and will help it attract more talented faculty and students as it’s an example of what the school’s culture is like.

“That speaks to our well-being and how this institution is led and operated on a regular basis,” Hardrick said.

The survey, administered throughout March and April by ModernThink LLC, a human-resources-consulting firm, was customized by higher-education experts, according to the Chronicle’s website, and was based on responses from over 45,000 people at 232 institutions.

The results of the survey were determined by two-parts: an institutional audit focusing on demographics and workplace policies and an anonymous survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff.

The colleges were then divided into four-year institutions and two-year institutions and separated into three groups based on enrollment: small (500 to 2,999 students), medium (3,000 to 9,999) and large (more than 10,000).

Except for diversity, recognition for each Great College category was given to the 10 highest-scoring institutions in each size grouping for four-year colleges and the four highest-scoring institutions in each size grouping for two-year colleges, the website states.

Beside being one of the institutions to receive the Great College recognition for four-year colleges, FIU was also one of the three four-year colleges to be recognized for their diversity.

“I am thrilled that The Chronicle of Higher Education has recognized that FIU is a special place where we value our faculty and staff and strive to create an environment where everyone feels that their contributions make a difference,” Claudia Puig, chairwoman of the FIU Board of Trustees said in a press release.

President Mark B. Rosenberg described this achievement as a “milestone” in an email to the student body Monday and has invited everyone to celebrate with him Wednesday, July 19 at MMC’s Green Library Breezeway at 1 p.m.

“At FIU, we are fortunate to have meaningful work that has a positive impact on our community,” Rosenberg wrote in the email. “Receiving recognition in all categories of
Great Colleges to Work For is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our faculty and staff. Thank you for taking responsibility and dedicating yourselves to doing your part to create an environment where our students succeed, graduating on time and moving on to successful jobs.”
