Breakfast in the Park held at FIU as part of Art Basel

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU will be hosting their 15th annual Breakfast in the Park event on Sunday, Dec. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. as part of Art Basel week, which highlights each year a different type of artwork; this year being modern Caribbean artwork.

The event includes a breakfast, a lecture by a well-respected sculptor, and guided tours of the Sculpture Park and exhibitions. This type of event “attracts art collectors, patrons, gallery owners, cultural luminaries, and artists from around the world” to visit Miami for Art Basel, according to a press release by the Frost Art Museum.

This year, the guest speaker is sculptor Elizabeth Turk, who is known for “transforming her signature medium of marble into strikingly intricate objects that defy convention and challenge our preconceptions of what marble can do,” according to the museum’s website.

“It’s about making something possible out of the impossible. I take a huge block of stone – weighing from 600 to 1000 pounds – and remove so much marble that the sculpture ends up weighing 50 to 75 pounds. People wonder, how can these sculptures hold themselves? I have to defy with gravity all the time. What has been removed from the marble stone is a tremendous amount of material so that only a delicate lattice remains,” said Turk of her work.
