With FIU riding a two game losing streak at the hands of the Kansas City Roos and Florida Gulf Coast, the Panthers looked towards getting back to their winning ways.
But to end their current skid, the Golden Panthers had to travel to Oregon to face off against a potent Oregon State offensive team that has been regularly in the top 25 for the past few years.
FIU stood no chance in a 7-0 loss at the hands of the Beavers on the road in one of the worst losses in recent memory.
Oregon State, from the get go, was the constant aggressor as they penetrated FIU territory multiple times.
Thankfully for FIU, their goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage made some incredible saves early on, which kept OSU off the board for the first 21 minutes of regulation.
Sadly for FIU, Savage could not keep OSU off the board for much longer, as OSU broke through in the 23rd minute of regulation.
Chelsea Buckland dribbled through the defense and past the keeper to score.
OSU was then up 1-0 and they never looked back as they ended up scoring two more times in a span of eight minutes.
Jacy Drobney scored in the 27th minute with a shot at the top of the box, in minute 30:16 Chelsea Buckland scored once again with a penalty kick.
The half concluded with OSU having a 3-0 lead and momentum securely in their grasp. But besides the shocking score at the half was the outrageous differential in shots between FIU and OSU.
The Panthers had a grand total of 2 shots at the half compared to OSU’s mind bottling 16 shots.
“We played a very good team that hasn’t scored many goals this season but they were hitting on all cylinders tonight,” Coach Thomas Chestnutt said.
“Everything on the night went well for them and they had some fantastic goals … their shooting was very spot on tonight.”
With half time coming to a close the Golden Panthers and Beavers took to the pitch but with the same tone that completed the first half.
The Beavers continued to control the tempo of the game and gave FIU fits up and down the field.
So as much as FIU tried to keep OSU at bay, it was to no avail as OSU scored once again.
This time it was a beautiful header off the cross by Justyne Freud that put her team up 4-0 in the 57th minute of regulation.
Even though the game was looking as a clear cut win for Oregon State, OSU’s offense continued with their offensive explosion as they rattled off three more devastating goals.
In 69th, minute Jenna Richardson scored her third goal of the year when she shot the ball wide and slid the ball in past Savage.
Then in the 81st minute, Melinda Ingalls scored a goal from six yards out. And finally OSU finished their scoring outburst as Chelsea Buckland scored her third goal of the game and the seventh for OSU.
This loss ended up being the worst loss under the tutelage of Chestnutt.
“We have never seen anything like that, their aggression to goal is unlike any team that I have coached against in my five seasons,” Chestnutt said.
“It’s embarrassing. It’s embarrassing to get beat by seven goals.”
When asked if this was a learning experience for the club, Chestnutt answered, “We can only keep learning so many times,” in reference to the club’s 2-5-0 record.
