A motion has been filed and approved by the Student Government Council at Biscayne Bay Campus’ Senate to bring SGC-BBC President Denise Halpin’s impeachment into discussion.

College of Arts & Sciences Senator and Internal Affairs Chair Farrah Yamini seconded Graduate School Senator Sagine Delly’s motion at Oct. 24’s senate meeting, allowing a vote to take place.

“We aren’t impeaching, but addressing a concern that one of the best senators on our senate have,” said Yamini.

Yamini also said Senator Delly “strongly feels like she wants to discuss the matter.”

The issue was approved as five Senate members were in favor, two opposed and four abstained. The Senate tabled the issue until the next meeting on Oct. 24 to ensure that Halpin will be present for discussion.

“The Senate requested that President Halpin attend the meeting so that they can hear her side before making any decisions,” said Speaker of the Senate Pablo Haspel.

In an email response, Delly said that she would not be able to comment on her motion. A full discussion was not possible because of time constraints.

According to Halpin, Delly has a “personal” issue and after it is addressed on Monday, the Senate “would then decide if there were strong grounds for impeachment.”

Under the SGA Constitution, the Senate must have a three-fifths vote to impeach Halpin and a two-thirds vote during impeachment proceedings to remove her from office. Vice President Emilio Collyer stressed during the initial discussion that impeachment does not automatically warrant removal from office.

Halpin ran unopposed for presidency during the spring 2011 semester and served as vice president of SGC-BBC during the 2010-2011 academic year.

PASSED RESOLUTIONS
A resolution to renovate the intramural field, where students play soccer, passed with a 10-1 vote. Plans include the building of stands and replacing patches of grass.

Hospitality Management Senator Alix Sanchez presented a resolution to replace and renovate missing tiles on the first floor of Academic II to the Senate, which also passed with a 9-0-2 vote. If approved by President Halpin, the improvements would be made in the next three weeks.

A resolution for the director of Academic Affairs to intervene with Career Services was also passed with a 11-0 vote. In her resolution, Yamini said Career Services was a valuable resource underused by students.

Despite the possible discussion of impeachment, Haspel estimates Halpin will either enact or veto these resolutions “in the next few days.”
