Panther Square dips into salsa

Biscayne Bay Campus will be spiced up with the hot rhythms of salsa throughout the  summer B term as the Student Programming Council launches the Dancing with the Wolfe Series.

The series will consist of seven classes every Tuesday, beginning June 26 until Aug. 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Panther Square in the Wolfe University Center.

Yolanda Gonzales, known professionally as Mambo Yoli, has taught salsa, merengue, cha-cha and bachata for more than eight years. She will teach New York style salsa on 2. It’s danced on the second beat of the music, usually characterized by the percussive instruments.

“When you’re learning specific dances, there has to be a focal point, but depending on how students adapt, I can introduce other latin dances,” Gonzales said. “The concept focus is salsa with a bonus on bachata and merengue.”

Gonzalez expects both male and female students to attend. “It helps if you have a partner, but you don’t need one.”

The event is free and open to all students. Students will be able to sign up once the event begins.

Gonzalez encourages all students to “come dressed comfortably and ready to have fun!”
