Traditional semester kick-off for Panthers

Vanessa Paredes/Life! EditorA warm welcome to all panthers.
Week of Welcome (W.O.W) is where the journey begins for most Panthers. This eventful week has become a well-known tradition throughout the years here at the University, with Student Programming Council hosting a plethora of activities for incoming and returning students to kick-off a new semester.
“Our welcome programs occur at the start of both fall and spring semesters and include a variety of events from pit events, to comedy shows, hypnotists, and of course, our Friday night movies,” said Lakesha Mcdaris, SPC president.
W.O.W has many traditional events, including Hypnotist Sailesh, the Greek BBQ and Trail of the Torch, that students typically expect to see every semester. Additionally, this year SPC will be hosting a few new activities as well to freshen things up, such as the FIU Splash Pool Party that took place this Saturday.

“There are some new things this year, like the pool party collaboration with SPC and Homecoming. We have never had an event together and this is huge, being that we are two of the largest organizations on campus,” said Mcdaris said.

The other events are spread out throughout the week. Students can expect everything from free food, a comedy show, and even the ALOHA (A Lifestyle of Healthy Alternatives) event on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., which includes games, a climbing wall, free giveaways, food, as well as information to help you with the university life.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students can benefit from W.O.W to get involved.
“Freshmen can expect to learn about traditions at FIU and how to get involved on campus. They can expect to meet new people and, most importantly, have a lot of fun,” said Mcdaris.

With giveaways, new opportunities to get involved, games, activities, parties and food, W.O.W will cater to students in many ways and provide everything that a Panther’s first week should consist of.
“W.O.W is exciting because you not only get to meet new people and go to fun events, but you also get a ton of free things, including t-shirts and giveaways,” said Mcdaris.
