Suspect on campus arrested

Brandon Wise/ News Director

On Monday evening at approximately 10:20 p.m., University Park Apartments residents were notified via PA system that there was a dangerous situation in the area. Students were advised to stay in their rooms and lock their doors until further notice.

Students in the area could hear sirens going off and helicopters circling the scene.

At approximately 10:40 p.m., the PA system came on again, notifying students that the area was clear and students should resume normal activities.

Residential Advisors told students that the situation was taken care of and it was safe to return to normal activities.

Upon further confirmation from Lt. Rick Torres, the Police made an arrest of a suspect who they were in pursuit of all day. Student Media was originally led to believe that this suspect was armed, but Torres confirmed that he was not armed.

The suspect who was arrested is not an FIU student, but he frequents the University Park Apartments area of the Modesto Madique Campus. He was bothering a female who lives in the area and was not armed when they made the arrest.
