The Intellectual Property Student Association and American Civil Liberties Union of FIU have partnered with the College of Law to sponsor the upcoming lecture entitled “The Internet and You” at the Modesto Maidique Campus this Wednesday, February 6, 2013 in the Rafael Diaz-Balart Hall from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“Our lecture will discuss how social media affects the law and particularly how it affects the intellectual property rights of artists, companies, individuals, and businesses,” said Ethan Wall, lecture panelist and attorney practicing social media law at Richman Greer in Miami, Fla. “Our lecture will be of particular interest to FIU students as everyone these days – including probably your mother – is on some form of social media, and what many people fail to realize is what they do and say on websites like Facebook, Twitter, and others, can have a very real impact on their lives and the lives of others.”
The event, which will take place in RDB room 2008, is open to all students and staff. It will feature a panel of speakers ranging from FIU professors to seasoned lawyers who will be speaking in-depth on issues relating to the legal implications involved with partaking in social media, and highlighting the ever-growing prominence of these topics in a society where the use of technology is becoming increasingly widespread. More specifically, the lecture will delve into matters of intellectual property as it relates to social media and networking sites, cyber civil liberties, and the conflicts attributed with the use of information sharing websites. Panelist Ethan Wall also asserts that the lecture will educate students on how legal matters such as those of trademark, copyright, and other intellectual property rights face new challenges with respect to recent increases in online social media use.
This event, organized by the FIU chapters of IPSA and ACLU in conjunction with the College of Law, aims to demonstrate the integral role that law plays in the development of current popular social media networks and its relationship with site users. Lecture panelists will include lawyers Jorge Espinosa and Ethan Wall, as well as FIU professors Howard Wasserman and Hannibal Travis.
According to Mr. Wall, “Technology and social media are evolving much faster than the law can adapt, so this lecture will explore how lawyers and judges adapt existing law to these new technologies, and will investigate how the law might change in light of this new ‘web 2.0’ online community.”
