After presenting their cases to the SGA appeals board, both presidential hopefuls Pablo Haspel and Alex Castro were turned down and cannot run for the SGC-MMC presidency in the upcoming election.
Haspel contended that the reasoning for his disqualification of not having 50 percent of his classes at MMC should not disallow him from the election. He believes that the constitution states the 50 percent rule is intended for presidents that are already in office, not seeking office.
The appeals board, however, stated that because his major is based out of the Broward Pines Center, which falls under the purview of the Biscayne Bay Campus, he should not be allowed to run, and they made that clear with a resounding 4-0 vote against Haspel.
In Castro’s case, he contended that he submitted one application with Phillip Koening, his potential vice presidential candidate. However, the appeal board said the two did not comply with the Elections code and that Koening was never on Castro’s ticket.
They voted 4-0 to keep Castro from running in the election. However, due to some of the language in the case, the board believed that this case may go to the Supreme Court.
Now, the SGC-MMC election will be uncontested as the only candidate left on the ticket who can run for the presidency is Liane Sippin, the original vice presidential candidate on Haspel’s ticket.
