With the 33rd pick in the 2013 National Football League draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Jonathan Cyprien, Safety, Florida International University.
That famous phrase helped put the panthers on the map as the highest draftee in the program history. This eclipses the pick of T.Y. Hilton of number 92 overall to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2012 draft.
He will join first round pick Luke Joeckel, a projected first overall pick, who will play offensive tackle for the Jags out of Texas A&M University. Joeckel fell to the second overall pick after the Kansas City Chiefs selected Eric Fisher out of Central Michigan University.
Cyprien’s social media was silent after the pick but the rest of the Panther nation was loud on the social media sites, especially twitter.
His fan-base here at FIU is ever present as former teammates, along with students also took to twitter and Facebook to congratulate their former team mate.
“Cyp To Jacksonville!!!” Quarterback EJ Hilliard tweeted after the pick was announced.
Former FIU Panther and Cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Anthony Gaitor expressed his congratulations to Cyprien via twitter.
“Congrats to my boy @J_Cyprien on getting drafted. Good luck on your journey. #TEAMFIU.”
The NFL draft still has some Panther hopefuls as former Defensive lineman Tourek Williams, former offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann, and Wayne Times, along with several others who all also hope to get a phone call from an NFL organization over the next two days.
If any name besides Cyprien is added to the draft list, it will be only the second time in Panther football history that multiple players were drafted in the same year. The only previous year being 2007 when players Antwan Barnes, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round as the 134th overall selection, and Chandler Williams, who went to the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round as the 233rd overall selection, joined the league.
