Provost and Executive Vice President Douglas Wartzok announced in a memorandum to the university community on May 9 his appointment of Dr. Larry Lunsford as vice president of student affairs.
Lunsford has served as interim vice president of student affairs since August 2012 and will resume his new role on May 13.
Lunsford was not a candidate for the position, however. At the time of Lunsford’s appointment as interim vice president, Wartzok told Student Media that he would not be able to play the role permanently.
“I have asked him not to [run] because if you are trying to attract a very strong pool of candidates externally and they know the interim person internally is also a candidate then they tend not to apply,” said Wartzok.
In the memo, Wartzok wrote that a “strong pool” of candidates was attracted and the search committee identified the best candidates, but he concluded that “[not one] of the external candidates would bring more to the position than Dr. Lunsford was already demonstrating.”
“Throughout his 24 years of service within the Division of Student Affairs, Dr. Lunsford developed a reputation for being a tireless ambassador for students and their needs as well as a valued colleague throughout the university,” wrote Wartzok.
