Twas the night before the beginning of fall…

Twas the night before the beginning of Fall, when all throughout FIU

not a professor was stirring, except the Starbucks that prepared for its daily brew,

Welcome signs and signage were placed with care,

In hopes that students would soon be there.

Students sorrowfully say farewell to sleeping in till twelve in the afternoon,

but take solace that it will return again in June.

Others bemoan the departure of beach tanning days,

and fear their pale skin will be so passé.

For some this semester marks the beginning of the end,

they savour their last months of college and say adieu to best friends,

While others begin their college lives,

they tightly grip campus maps in order to survive.

The students’ hands go completely numb,

as ratemyprofessor.com tells them which teachers to stay away from.

They roar with frustration as their computer has just frozen,

and contemplate “which professor should be chosen?”

Emails are sent and meetings planned,

to remind faculty and staff about the problems at hand,

Clubs and groups prepare their recruiting events,

while the Beacon searches for news-worthy content.

Fashionistas wait in sinuous lines,

exploiting back-to-school sales to get the latest designs,

While techies copy and paste ISBNs,

trying to find different ways not to spend

The more cunning students set their alarms for seven AM,

remembering that a good parking space is a rare gem,

Some dream dreams of hope and success,

while others are filled with mountains of stress.

New professors revise and revise their syllabi,

and practice the Socratic method by asking “why?”

The experienced professors rearrange office furniture,

and hope this will be the year they’re awarded tenure.

The night before no one will be able to sleep,

they will wonder, hope, and dream until they hear their alarms BEEP!

To all a good year,

and to Freshman have no fear!
