The FIU men’s soccer team (6-8-0, 2-4-0 C-USA) makes quick work of the University of Kentucky (4-8-2, 1-3-2 C-USA) as they defeat the Wildcats (4-1) in Lexington, Kentucky.
The win snapped a season long three-game losing streak. When asked what the main reason for the turnaround Head Coach Ken Arena stated that it was the belief and trust of his team that kept them going.
“The belief that our team has that we can play well and win these games,” Said Arena “The whole time that we were losing the close games we still believed that we had a good team and that we could do what we did against Marshall and tonight on any given day. Tonight we got the result that the team deserved; we stayed strong and committed to what we are doing and we got the win.”
The game saw its first goal in the 25th minute when freshman defender Marvin Hezel scored his third goal of the season. Senior midfielder Gonzalo Frechilla assisted Hezel on the goal. The assist gives Frechilla the team lead with five assist. FIU would take the 1-0 lead to half time and never look back.
In the second period the Panthers came out firing. In the 57th minute junior forward Quentin Albrecht connected on his sixth goal of the season to give FIU a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats. The goal would give Albrecht sole possession of the team lead in goals, that is until junior forward Roberto Alterio was able to put the nail in Kentucky’s coffin by converting on two goals in the span of six minutes to overtake Albrecht for the team lead in goals with seven and give FIU a 4-0 advantage.
Kentucky would eventually get a goal in the 89th minute, but it was far too late as FIU was able to win its second conference game of the season (4-1)
FIU will look to keep rolling as they come back home to take on the University of South Carolina Gamecocks on October 30. Game is set to kick-off at 6:30 p.m.
