FIU women’s soccer falls in season finale

The FIU women’s soccer had their season finale, falling 1-0 to Marshall University. Despite the loss the Panthers have already clinched a spot in the Conference USA tournament. The Panthers close the season (7-11-0) and (5-5-0) in C-USA

The lone goal came in the 21st minute as Lia Foster netted the ball from 30 yards out, off the free kick. Goalkeeper freshman Vanessa Plasencia was unable to get to the ball as it went right over her head to the far right post.

Plasencia got the start at goalkeeper in place of redshirt junior Paula Zuluaga. When asked about the change in the starting lineup head coach Thomas Chestnutt said he “wouldn’t discuss the lineup changes” and that going forward for the C-USA tournament it would be the same.

The Panthers went shot less in the first half, not recording a single stat except for two saves by Plasencia. Things did get better for FIU in the second half as they got off seven shots with two on goal, but it wasn’t enough.

“Moving forward for the tounrment we want to play our game. Play positive” said coach Chestnutt. “It’s too bad our seniors had to end this way.”

It was senior night at FIU soccer stadium as the seniors on the Panther roster were honored: Nicole DiPerna, Crystal McNamara, Paige Covington, Paula Zuluaga and Kim Lopez

“They have done so much for the program in the last four year and it’s been special to be a part of their lives watching them grow over the years” Chestnutt said. “We’re turning to the tournament now. I could care less who we play, we just have to play our game.”

The C-USA tournament begins on November, 6th in Huston, Texas.
