The men’s basketball team were unable to connect at the free throw line, resulting in a 93-88 overtime loss to Florida A&M.

The loss is the Panther’s third-straight, after their matches versus Louisville and Georgetown.

Redshirt junior Dennis Mavin led the team with 24 points, on 16-of-21 from the free throw line. Redshirt senior Rakeem Buckles notched a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Sophomore Jerome Frink, senior Tymell Murphy, redshirt sophomore Cody Mann and freshman Jason Boswell each scored in double figures with 12, 15, 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The Panthers attempted a season-high 51 free throws, converting 33 of them for 64.7 percent.

FIU shot 56.5 percent, 13-of-23, in the first half and led the Rattlers 39-33 going into the locker room but the Rattlers rallied back and outscored the Panthers 48-42 in the second half.

The Panthers still led throughout most of the game and had a six-point lead with 54 seconds left, but missed free throws would come back to haunt the team.

A 3-pointer by the Rattlers’ Jamari Bradshaw forced the game into overtime at 81. He would then record five of the teams 12 points in the extra period.

FIU hit just 5-of-10 free throws in the final minute of regulation and went 1-of-7 from the field in overtime.

The Panthers shot 49 percent from the floor, but only mustered 3-of-13 from beyond the arc.

The Rattlers out-rebounded the Panthers, 43-40 and out-scored them in the paint, 44-38.

During their losing streak, the Panthers have been out-rebounded, 110-100, and have turned the ball over more, 48-32.

The Panthers will open up Conference USA action Thursday, Jan. 9. against the Rice Owls in Houston, Texas.
