FIU Makes Quick Work of DePaul

By Yosvany Rodriguez/Staff Writer

FIU (3-0) made quick work of the DePaul Blue Demons in game one of two on the second day of the Felsburg Memorial. The Panthers only needed five innings to put away DePaul, winning by knockout 8-0. Sophomore pitcher Corinne Jenkins made her second start of the season for the Panthers.

FIU got on the board in the bottom of second inning when an error by DePaul shortstop Allie Braden allowed junior infielder Krystal Garcia and senior utility player Rachel Slowik to cross home plate off of an infield ground ball by senior infielder Kaye Bre. FIU would score once more in the second to take a 3-0 lead, thanks to a single by junior outfielder Rebekah Sanchez. The hit was the sixth of the season for Sanchez.

The Panthers would add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two out RBI double from Garcia that drove in sophomore infielder Dani Mowry from first base. Slowik would single in Garcia to extend the Panther lead to 5-0.

The panthers would continue to pile on the runs in the Fourth inning thanks in part to Freshman infielder Stephanie Texeira who was able to get on base with her team leading eighth hit of the season. Texeira would eventually score to extend the lead to 6-0 on a base hit from sophomore catcher Aleima Lopez. The RBI was Lopez’ fourth on the season.

FIU didn’t need much run support with the gem of a game Jenkins was having. Jenkins pitched 5 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits, while recording one strikeout and no walks. Jenkins would only throw 46 pitches.

In the fifth inning the Panthers went for the knockout punch. Garcia led the inning with a walk. Slowik reached base on a fielder’s choice and advanced Garcia to second. With the winning run at first head coach Jake Schumann called for a double steal, but Garcia was thrown out at third. With one out in the inning leadoff hitter Bre walked to give the Panthers runners on second and first. The next hitter Sanchez reached on a fielder’s choice, but Slowik was thrown out at third. Next up to bat came the hottest hitter on the team, Texeira who was 8-10 coming into this at bat. Sure enough she would deliver with a walk-off two-run double to give the panthers an 8-0 victory.

FIU takes on the Maryland Terrapins in game two of the double-header of the Felsburg Memorial at 3:00 p.m.
