The FIU Triathlon Club is calling all swimmers, cyclists and runners to join them this Sunday, May 18 at 7 a.m. on the Biscayne Bay Campus for their third annual triathlon event.

The FIU 2575 Triathlon North Miami hosted by Miami Tri Events is a sprint triathlon which is about half the distance of an Olympic triathlon.

Participants will first swim .46 miles (.75K) in the Biscayne Bay, then bike 12.4 miles (20K) through Oleta River State Park and lastly, run 3.1 miles (5K) across campus.

“I think people do it to challenge themselves,” said Christina Reddick, triathlon race coordinator and Tri Club advisor.

The triathlon is part of a weekend-long event which begins on Saturday, May 17, with an Aquathlon open to kids and adults at 8 a.m., followed by a 5K charity run at 5 p.m.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, Coach Erinne Guthrie, USA Triathlon Certified Level II coach and athlete of nearly 15 years, will also be delivering a Pre-Race Clinic for all triathlon participants at the FIU 2575 North Miami Expo.

Reddick said in an email that more people registered for this Sunday’s event than previous triathlons—a total of 500.

In an interview, Reddick said Miami Tri Events covers event production costs, including registration for up to 100 students. However, the cap has already been met, so students are to pay $50 to participate.

Tri Club membership is $25 for faculty and staff and $35 for community members, but $129 is the cost of the triathlon.

Participants must also be members of USA Triathlon and can join during registration. A one-day membership is available for $12 which will provide insurance coverage the day of the event.

Competitors can register as individuals or as a relay team of two or three members.

Volunteers are needed to assist with packet pick-up and registration, water stations, body marking and other tasks for the weekend of events. Volunteers are to register at 2014fiutrivolunteer.eventbrite.com.

Those who compete or volunteer will be eligible for the BBC Recreation Scholarship in the fall.

To register visit the Tri Club’s website at www.fiutriathlon.com. For more information about the race contact Christina Reddick at (305) 919-4549 or email Reddick@fiu.edu.
