University expects more traffic with upcoming graduations

Rebeca Piccardo/News Director

Graduation season is far from over as far as the University is concerned—and students driving in and out of Modesto A. Maidique Campus will see a surge in traffic because of it.

It all begins with the College of Law commencement ceremony on Friday, May 23 at 10 am.

The worst of the traffic is expected about an hour before commencement begins and about an hour after it ends, according to a memorandum from the office of External Relations.

Due to commencement, lot 9D, which is next to the College of Business Complex and the Rafael Balart-Diaz Hall will be closed for event staff.

Panther Parking Garage, which is next to the U.S. Bank Century Arena, will be used by guests attending commencement.

Also, the intersection of Southwest 113th Avenue and University Drive will be closed from the entrance of lot 8 to the entrance of lot 9.

High School graduation schedule:

Then come the high school graduates, with 16 school graduations taking place at the University arena from Tuesday, May 27 until Tuesday, May 3.

On most days, there will be three graduations a day, one at 10 am, one at 3 pm and a final one at 8 pm.

Due to the staggered graduations each day, University students should expect high traffic on and off starting at 9 am during this period.

High school graduations are expected to last between 90 minutes and two hours, according to the memorandum sent by External Relations.

Although lots won’t be closed down during high school graduations, there will be more congestion around the Panther Parking Garage and the lots that are closer to the arena—lot 9 by the College of law, lot 10 by the tennis courts and Lot 11 by arena.

During this period of graduations, the intersection of Southwest 113th Avenue and University Drive will be closed from the entrance of lot 8 to the entrance of lot 9.
