Baseball eliminated from Conference USA tournament

With a 10 a.m. start, at least to those of us in eastern standard time, the Panthers began what would go on to be their final game of the 2014 baseball season.

The Panthers, who lost their first game of the 2014 Conference USA Baseball tournament to the Owls of Rice University 9-2, ended the season with an elimination game loss to the Monarchs of Old Dominion University.

Behind right-handed pitcher Mike Franco, who was recently named first-team all CUSA, pitched the first 3.1 innings in the 3-2 loss.

Franco however, did not get the loss on the day. In his innings of work he gave up four hits, had five strike outs, and gave up two walks.

The loss was given to right-handed pitcher Albert Cardenas, who pitched for 1.2 innings. In those inning he allowed three hits, three runs – two of which were earned runs – and had a single strikeout and a single walk.

The lone home run of the day was by catcher Aramis Garcia, the CUSA Player of the year, who also had two hits, two RBI’s and a double.

The other run was scored by left fielder Zach Sweety.

If the Panthers do not get invited into the NCAA postseason tournament they will have finished off their season with a record of 36-20 (16-13 Regular Season CUSA, 0-2 Postseason CUSA).
