The Biscayne Bay Campus’ Student Government Council president announced her pick for chief of staff during the first general meeting of the summer.

The chief of staff acts as an auditor for the executive branch. She will be responsible for enforcing office hours and attendance at senate and general meetings, as well as help fill the remaining cabinet positions within student government.

General meetings consist of all three branches of student government.

Karla Marte, a junior majoring in biology, will be formally appointed as chief of staff during the next general meeting. Senators will also vote for their speaker of the senate next week.

The cabinet did not reach quorum, which means they could not conduct a formal meeting, appoint new members or discuss the day’s agenda.

Three out of seven senators attended the meeting. Two of the absent senators have not attended any of the three SGC-BBC summer meetings.

Jazmin Felix, SGC-BBC’s president, stressed the importance of senators upholding their responsibilities and being committed to student government.

“We need to call the senators and figure out what is going on,” Felix said.

SGC-BBC’s main goal for the summer is to recruit students to fill senate positions.

Among the positions available are press secretary, clerk of council, special events coordinator and director of lectures. These positions fall within the executive cabinet of SGC.

Senators are needed to represent the schools of arts and sciences, education, hospitality management, journalism and mass communications and nursing and health sciences.
