Zombies, vampires, ghouls and witches will be gathering for a scare this Halloween at “Boo!” a FIU Haunted House Extravaganza.

Hosted by the FIU Continuing and Professional Education college, the event will be held at the University’s U.S. Century Bank Area Panther Suites. It includes two haunted houses that cater to children and adults of all ages.

Amy Tenorio, a sophomore biomedical engineering major, said she looks forward to celebrate the evening with her friends and relatives. “Halloween is a day where everyone can have a good time,” she said.

This alternative to traditional trick-or-treating is a community event that the entire family can experience.

Leoncio Alvarez, a professor for the University College Department and the event’s coordinator, said that the extravaganza will offer the community a safe and fun Halloween experience.

Alvarez said he hopes that the event will raise awareness for CPE’s new aftercare and youth programs available for children of ages 5 to 14.

“We are all about making kids happy here at CPE. We love seeing the smiles on their faces,” said Alvarez. “Everything we do is for them and we can’t wait to see them and their families all dressed up.”

A few of the many activities that will take place outside the area are costume contests, Halloween-themed games, rock climbing, bull riding, dunk-tanking and raffles.

There will also be musical entertainment such as a special Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance performance, an appearance by the FIU marching band, and a disk jockey to provide tunes throughout the night.

Food, candy and vendors will also be provided.

University students who plan on participating in Halloween activities are looking forward to the thrill of fear.

“I love the idea of laughing at fear and looking it straight in the eye,” said Bronte Duvic, a sophomore communication arts major. “Halloween, to me, is taking at least one day out of the year to dress up and acknowledge that it’s okay to believe in something that doesn’t make complete sense.”

Volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to dress up to help bring the event to life, said Alvarez. To find more information on how to be involved, students can contact the office of CPE.

Admissions are at $10 and are available to purchase at afterschool.fiu.edu and the arena’s box office. Children ages 3 and under are free of charge. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. Oct. 31.
