RADIO SOUL DETAILED FUN FACT: Vassal Benford & Tremaine Hawkins. Vassal Benford is a prominent songwriter/producer/musician who has a track record of over 30 years. He is known for producing songs for JADE, Ralph Tresvant, La Rue, Klymaxx, Flo Rida, Deborah Cox,etc. He also contributed scores to House Party 2, Class Act, The Advocate, & Swan Princess IV.
Benford also produced the Tremaine Hawkins classic, “Fall Down (Spirit Of Love)” while still a teenager. This was the first song produced by Benford In 1983, the song was issued, and was the first gospel song to really cross over on the Dance scene. In addition to The Clark Sisters cover to Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster (Jammin’)”, the song became a staple in dance clubs. Before Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, J. Moss, Tye Tribbett, Miami’s own T-Dogg,etc. there was Lady Tremaine with production from Vassal Benford.
Tremaine Hawkins recorded the song while signed to A&M Records. She has been in sxthe industry since 1968. Hawkins also became the first gospel artist to be signed to Columbia Records, one of the industry’s most prestigious labels. She is known for the classic “Goin’ Up Yonder”. Hawkins also worked with legends such as Carlos Santana, Stanley Turrentine and MC Hammer, who did a cover of “Do Not Pass Me By”.
