It’s quieter, hotter and you can finally secure a seat on a roller glider these days. That means the summer term has started!
With so many people away on vacation, it’s easy to wonder what the few students that are on campus are up to. Simply put, they’re using their extra time wisely by crossing classes off their lists and putting some more cash in their pockets.
Working a full time job at Champs Sports and taking three summer classes, Yazmin Perez, sophomore, isn’t sure just when or where she’ll take a break.
“I think in either June or July I might take a small family vacation, probably just a week long… [My family] is saying to either Orlando or St. Augustine,” said Perez.
Vilma Canalejo, junior, also works full time but takes four classes. She definitely doesn’t have the time nor the energy to go out and have fun after her long days. However, she will try to make an effort to make some time for herself now that she’s realized what FIU’s athletic fee is for.
“I’m going to start going to the gym since I’m already paying for it,” said Canalejo.
There seems to be a trend of not having anything set in stone when it comes to getaway plans as Perez showed.
Canalejo hopes to travel to Switzerland after Summer C classes end in August, but that’s still a big “maybe” for her.
Jackelyn Vazquez, freshman, is searching up cruises online – also for around August, but not sure of the destination yet.
Jazmyn Pratt, freshman, has no vacation plans whatsoever. While Vazquez works part time and attends three classes, Jazmyn is taking it a little easier with just two classes and no job.
When asked about what they do for fun in the area, Pratt shrugged and replied “Just the beach,” while Vazquez made an equal “no big deal” expression as she answered, “I go kayaking sometimes.”
As for on campus activities this summer, Vazquez was the only one aware of any. She enjoys the free food and giveaways, but admits that she only participates if she happens to pass by during her free time.
Who can blame the rest that have no clue of anything going on around campus?
Yselande Pierre, Co-Assistant Director of Campus Life and SPC Advisor, explained that SPC does not schedule events for Summer A.
“Right now we’re in the recruitment process, so there’s no program yet until we have all the board members together,” said Pierre.
“But I do know we have staples like Summer Splash that we do every year and we do movies every summer.”
Ivy Siegel Mack, Co-Assistant Director of Campus Life and SOC Advisor assured that Campus Life has hosted a Summer A Ice Cream Social so far and is getting ready for their Summer B welcome event.
Hopes are that by Summer B the program of activities on campus will be in place and students will have more opportunities to get away from the stresses of class and work.
Until then, enjoy the summer to the fullest and just hang in there Panthers!
