This week in tech: The future of sex and machines

However you may look at it sex is an important part of being human. Whether it is for pleasure or procreation it is an unavoidable topic we each have to tackle. Even for asexuals, of which the idea of sex exists as an entity outside of pleasure, can’t evade the topic. At some point in your life you decide to have sex, not to have sex, whom to have sex with, whom to not have sex with and so forth and so on.

One more unavailable truth is this – sex sales. Just take a look at a majority of our marketing tactics. Sexuality and what it is and what it isn’t has been defined over and over again by so many different people that the terms sex and sexuality has become ambiguous. Here is something that may blur the lines even more: sex robots.

Anyone who has ever watched a sci-fi movie or read a sci-fi book may have already seen the idea come into play in novels and theaters. Well, just like the idea of virtual reality sex bots are a sure thing of the future. One man has already started creating them. Watch this documentary about artist Matt McMullen and his dream of creating real life robots for your companionship – in more ways than one.

The Uncanny Lover – A New York Times Documentary

The sex doll industry in the United States alone is worth over 15 billion dollars in March, 2013. The number would have increased, if only insubstantially, over the past two years.McMullen who owns a love-doll website, Realdolls.com, sells his dolls from  $6,500 to over $51,000.

Because the sex doll industry is so large now I think that “companionship robots” will boom. Think about it? The similarities between sex dolls and these robots are large, their differences small.

But is creating an essentially new industry for sex dolls good?

As you may know Japan’s population is a birth decrease. Simply meaning the amount of people giving birth in Japan is at an all time low. There are many reasons, both social and economical, why this may be happening. But as a result many different industries for sex have been created in Japan. Sex dolls being one of their larger industries. Because of the sex doll industry, and others, Japanese men and women become complacent in seeking human-to-human love. Instead of seeking a partner they have substitutes – love/sex dolls. As a result every year that passes Japanese population gets smaller.

I am telling you this because I think that it says a lot about the power of the sex industry. Even though there are numerous reasons why Japan is facing this problem I hope that we can agree on one thing, sex dolls aren’t helping to stabilize the birth and death rate of the country.

My prediction is that as the industry for sex robots grows the more people will stop seeking human companionship over machine companionship. (Don’t we already do that with our phones and computers?) Populations will significantly decrease. Is that such a bad thing? Overpopulation is am issue in our globalized society. Sex robots may also decrease human trekking and illegal prostitution.

Sex robots are the future of the sex industry.
