Let’s face it, the Biscayne Bay Campus doesn’t have nearly as many food options as the South Campus, however, BBC does have something that MMC will never have, and that’s Popeye’s fried chicken.
Just a 10 minute drive from campus, my friends and I found the restaurant with ease.
For years, this Popeye’s has served the North Miami Beach community, and now, three broke college students.
As I walk in, I am immediately hit with the overwhelming scent of fresh baked biscuits, and my stomach started rumbling.
The establishment is oddly homey, it’s décor simple, and almost like walking into someone’s kitchen.
Another plus was that the restaurant was very clean, and it even had subtle Louisiana inspired decorations like iron signs which were reminiscent of the New Orleans balcony architecture I’ve seen before.
Upon reviewing the menu, they have a very simple selection. Popeye’s is primarily focused on their famous chicken, however, there are also seafood options like fish and shrimp.
But I’m here for the chicken, baby.
The only difficult part was what signature side I wanted.
From red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese to Cajun rice and jambalaya, it was hard to choose just one.
After careful consideration and feedback from my peers, I decided to go with the red beans and rice.
Just like most fast food restaurants, my meal was prepared and ready within minutes of ordering.
When my food arrived, my friends were oohing and ahhing over the beauty that was bestowed upon my plate: steamy golden brown chicken, a large bowl of red beans and rice and fresh biscuits.
Even though it looked pretty, I was still leery and worried that it might not live up to my expectations, so I immediately sat down and grabbed the first chicken thigh I saw.
The verdict: Oh my God.
It was incredible. Every bite had the perfect amount of crunch and juiciness from the chicken. It was well seasoned and the batter didn’t overpower the chicken itself.
I have been to dozens of restaurants where their fried chicken doesn’t compare to the quality and freshness of Popeye’s, so this was a pleasant surprise.
Next, I try a big spoonful the red beans and rice. As a Hispanic, I’m a pretty tough critic when it comes to rice and beans, but this dish was amazing. With its perfectly seasoned beans, it was hearty and tasty, even my grandma would approve.
Can it get better? Yes it can.
The biscuits were probably my favorite part of the meal. They were soft, flakey and decadent. With its rich buttery flavor, it added a subtle saltiness that made my mouth water.
My friends weren’t disappointed either.
“The chicken was delicious, those red beans and rice really hit the spot,” says senior, Jorge Perez.
This Louisiana inspired restaurant is unlike other fast food joint. With their premium quality food, I can see why people love to eat here.
“The biscuits were everything I expected,” says journalism major, Kayla Johnson.
Overall, the food was outstanding.
For being a chain restaurant, Popeye’s really goes above and beyond with the flavor and quality of their meals.
With their friendly staff and amazing chicken, I will definitely visit this place again.
