FIU Women’s Soccer unable to beat No.12 UF

The Panthers continue their hot or cold season falling this weekend to the 12th ranked Women’s Soccer team in the nation, and in-state rivals, the University of Florida Gators. This has been the same song throughout the season, playing well against unranked teams then coming just short when their competition has a rank that goes along with their name.

FIU’s record fell to 4-5 after an embarrassing 6-1 loss to Florida, who’s record improved to 8-3. This was an imposing matchup coming into FIU this Sunday, and the Gators proved to outmatch FIU in every facet throughout the 90 minutes Sunday afternoon.

The FIU offense was only able to put up one score and it came late in the first half in the 42nd minute. Junior Alyssa Robinson came up with her third goal of the year and the only goal for the team on Sunday when she found the UF goalkeeper out of the goal and capitalized on it. Other than that, and shot from Junior Talia McMurtrie that was blocked by the UF keeper, the FIU offense was shut down by the Gators.

The FIU defenders were put to the test against UF and struggled throughout the game, allowing three goals each half in Sunday’s loss. Goal keeper Sophia Trujillo was under duress throughout the game and the one time she was able to block a shot from the Gators, she deflected it right back to them for a second chance that ended up in the back of the net.

Every phase of the game lost on Sunday to the University of Florida. The Women’s soccer team had a bad game against a great UF team. But they have a chance to take out their emotions on a struggling UTSA team that has gone 0-7-1 so far this season. FIU takes on UTSA this Friday, September 25th, at the FIU Soccer Stadium at 6 p.m.
