The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater was pulsating with energetic beats and dancing feet last Tuesday, Oct. 13. Ohio indie pop band Walk the Moon took over the venue for the night, guaranteeing a great time.
Surprisingly, this was the first time Walk The Moon played in Miami in their young career. As a thank you to their South Florida fans for the feat, the band provided a special edition poster for sale, a picture of Ocean Drive serving as the backdrop.
At around 9 p.m. the stage was darkly lit, soft red hues dissipating in the mysterious smoke that had begun to float onto the stage. Suddenly, “Circle of Life” erupted through the venue, the crowd screaming as Walk The Moon walked out onto the stage.
The energy that suddenly exploded in the cramped space was undeniable and only became stronger as the first few notes of “Jenny” were played.
Other popular songs were played, both from the newest album “Talking is Hard” and older albums, such as “Different Colors” and radio-hit “Shut Up and Dance.”
Besides a fantastic entry and lively set, Walk The Moon had a brilliant light show. During “Different Colors,” different colors lit up the stage, flashes of red, orange and purple illuminating lead singer, Nicholas Petricca. During slower songs such as “Avalanche” and “Aquaman,” gentler, white and blue lights faded out and into one another.
What could have been the best part of the show was the utterly professional sound quality. Although the bass could be felt in your ribcage and the guitar in the soles of your feet, no instrument overpowered the other, resulting in clear sound that was easy to jam out to.
This was especially important when Petricca hit his well-known high pitched notes, such as the one towards the beginning of “Up 2 U.”
The band disappeared at around 10:40 p.m., fans begging for one more song. Lucky for us, Walk The Moon strode back out for a two-song encore, dazzling lights accompanying them. They finished fun and strong, with songs “We Are The Kids” and “Anna Sun” serving as their finale.
Although Walk The Moon may not be selling out venue after venue on their “TALKING IS HARD,” tour they are well on their way to a lengthy career. There was no doubt after experiencing one of their shows live. With a vibrant, animated performance and an audience returning the same energy given to them, Tuesday night with Walk The Moon was definitely unforgettable.
