The University’s chapter of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity are on an interim suspension pending the results of the investigation of Kellie Fullilove’s death.

The suspension means that Phi Gamma Delta, also known as FIJI, are not allowed to hold meetings and events or participate in campus events as a group, University spokeswoman Maydel Santana-Bravo wrote in an email to Student Media.

Officials from both the University and FIJI’s national headquarters handed down the suspension.

“The members who live in the house are allowed to remain through the interim suspension and all members are allowed to continue attending classes,” Santana-Bravo wrote.

Fullilove, 19, died on Nov. 15 after attending a party at the Bahia Mar hotel in Fort Lauderdale organized by Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Det. Kevin Dupree, spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, said to Student Media on Nov. 19 that the cause of Fullilove’s death is unknown.

Fort Lauderdale PD are waiting on the Medical Examiner’s toxicology report.

“There’s nothing suspicious,” Dupree said on Nov. 17.  “There’s no indication of foul play.”

Fullilove was enrolled in the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences and earned her associate of arts and science degree from Florida Gulf Coast University.

Henry Brimo, president of the University’s chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, emailed the following statement to Student Media.

“The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta join our fellow students in mourning the death of our friend Kellie Fullilove. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and other friends. We will continue to cooperate with the appropriate authorities as they investigate the incident.”

Santana-Bravo sent the following statement to Student Media on Nov. 16, which was also posted on the University’s Facebook page.

We are saddened by the death of a student this past weekend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. The student had attended an off campus social event organized by Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity right before she passed away.

FIU is offering support to students who are affected by this tragedy.

The incident is being investigated by Fort Lauderdale Police.

A GoFundMe page was created on Nov. 16 to raise money for Fullilove’s funeral services.

Student Media will update this report when more information becomes available.
