The Wolfsonian-FIU will be hosting another Craft + Craft event on January 15 at 7 p.m. in tribute to their special exhibit, Philodendron: From Pan-Latin Exotic to American Modern. The museum’s Craft + Craft events feature local breweries and artsy craft activities for participants.
“I am a huge craft beer fan,” said Heather Cook, public programs manager at The Wolfsonian, “we really want to feature local breweries that are doing great things in the community”
For this latest event they have partnered up with Wynwood’s original Concrete Beach Brewery. This brewery has made it its mission to craft beer inspired by the culture and flavors of Miami. In their beers they have incorporated an array of flavors, such as citrus, coconut, passion fruit, caramel, toffee and vanilla–arguably as varied as the culture they represent.
The arts and crafts portion of the event is inspired by the special exhibit will feature two options: a nature inspired tile or a paper cutout plant. The former is a ready-to-paint tile square decorated with an organic design, inspired by the philodendron flora. Paints, along with the tile, will be provided. The latter is a quirky, colorful paper flora to be assembled by the participant.
Cook, who has run all Craft + Craft events, has taken a preference to the paper cutout option, “the joke is that it’s a plant you can’t kill,” she said.
The event is open to visitors 21 and over, the entrance fees are $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members. FIU students and students from the State University system of Florida pay the member price.
The entrance fee covers craft supplies and one craft beer sample. However, a full bar will be provided and the museum’s cafe will be open.
With the entrance fee, participants are allowed to take a look around all of the museum’s collections; Cook encourages taking a look at the Philodendron exhibit for craft inspiration.
“At first people think ‘oh I’m not artsy’, but even if it’s not perfect the process is the true experience,” said Cook, “I always look forward to seeing what people are going to come up with.”
