Florida International University’s student run radio station ranked No. 2 on Miami New Times’ list of best local radio stations.

The station’s vast musical catalog and talk shows earned WRGP the runner up spot on the list released May 11.

“We have DJs with very unique personalities and a very unique way to connect with their audience,” said Erica Santiago, WRGP general manager.

The 24-hour station plays music of a plethora of different genres and has directors in charge of each genre.

The station is well known for its focus on local music.

WRGP features a two-hour program on Wednesdays, The Pipeline, that exclusively plays music made in Miami.

In addition, tracks from local record labels and Miami independent artists are also featured throughout the station’s regular programming.

“As a college radio station, we focus on our demographic, and the students want to listen to local music,” Santiago told Miami New Times.

Currently there are about 50 student DJs and 50 specialty shows on WRGP playing everything from K-pop to heavy metal.

The station’s talk shows focus on a variety of subjects including university issues, sports, pop culture and international news.

“It’s a place of entertainment and information for the student body,” said Santiago.

WRGP can be heard on 95.3 FM or streamed online at fiusm.com/wrgp.
