FIU fires head Coach Ron Turner

Peter Holland/Asst. Sports Director

The morning after a loss against University of Central Florida, Ron Turner was fired by Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment, Pete Garcia.

“I want to thank Coach Turner for his contributions to the FIU football program, most importantly his commitment to academics and community service,” Garcia said.

The 53-14 loss against the Knights was FIU’s fourth straight blow out of the season; the Panthers are currently 0-4.

Turner is 10-26 in the past three seasons and has not been bowl eligible in his FIU coaching career. Ron Cooper, the defensive coordinator, will be the interim head coach until a replacement is named.

Turner’s contract had been set to run through Jan. 3, 2018. According to the terms of the contract, FIU will owe him a little more than $700,000 as the buyout, subject to offset if he gets another job in either college or pro-coaching.

Garcia has not given any specifics on the timeline to find Turner’s replacement, but did say a national search would be conducted at the appropriate time.

The Panthers will face Florida Atlantic University at FIU Stadium in their conference opener on Oct.1st.
