Hurricane Matthew approaches South Florida

The University will be closed after 5 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, as well as Thursday and Friday October 6-7, in preparations for Hurricane Matthew.

Hurricane Matthew, a category four hurricane, is moving northward towards Florida after devastating Haiti.

“Due to the expected impact of Hurricane Matthew on South Florida, FIU will be closed today (Wednesday) starting at 5 p.m., as well as Thursday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 7, 2016. All classes, including online classes, concerts, home games and other events are canceled,” read an email sent to students from External Relations.

Students living on campus are urged to find a friend to spend the storm with off campus, or to go home. Those who remain on campus will have accommodations made in Parkview, according to the University’s  Department of Emergency Management website.

“Shelter will be provided for residential students in the common areas and hallways of Park View Hall. You will be safe, but it isn’t the most comfortable place to be. You’re better off going home or staying with a friend in a house that is protected,” the website says.

Resident students who plan to spend the storm on campus should move vehicles into garages starting this evening. The Golden Panther Express will run until 7 p.m. this evening.

All the food venues will be closed Thursday and Friday with the exception of Fresh Food Company, which will serve only breakfast on Thursday. Fresh Food will reopen on Friday afternoon, along with Starbucks in the Green Library, and the Breezeway, weather permitting

This large and powerful storm — currently a category 4 hurricane — could begin impacting South Florida as early as Wednesday, even if the eye of the hurricane stays off shore. At this time, all university operations are normal.” External Relations said.

Students can expect to be informed through updates from FIU emergency managers in the event of an emergency which includes hurricanes, according to the email sent out by External Relations.

This is a developing story.
