Students: Support our players

Linda Rios/ Contributing Writer

During homecoming week, the homecoming council promotes several events in order to get the student body engaged in college life. One of the main events that occur every year are the school’s football games; these allow us to fully experience what being part of an amazing university means.

Throughout the seasons, we have seen fewer students show up to the games FIU hosts but the school has deviced a plan to get the students to show up to the games: Tablets.

When I found out at the beginning of the season that FIU’s Marketing and Promotion Department was offering tablets to all of those students who showed up to every football game I was intrigued and interested because who wouldn’t want a new tablet?

I have to admit that I’m one of those students who don’t show up to support our several sporting teams, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care for them.

Those students who are able to live on campus, or at least live near it have a better viability of showing up to the games and support our sporting teams, rather than those who have a long commute from their houses to campus.

The majority of students tend to show up to the games for the tailgate and stay throughout the first half of the game, before they leave, leaving the rest of the game to seem empty and discouraging to the players.

Other sports teams, such as FIU’s soccer provide different incentives, such as giveaways of FIU shirts and headphones, in order to have students show up at the games and provide support to the team.

Students have been showing up to more games this season alone compared to the past seasons, according to attending students and coaches, thanks to the incentives that have been provided, yet there must be another way to make the students want to show up to the games and support our school.
Homecoming has been doing an amazing job this year by promoting all of the events through different media sources and constant reminders all around campus, but it’s the student’s job to attend the events and support the university they’ve decided to attend.
