On Sunday, Sept. 25 Jose Fernandez and two of his friends died tragically in a boating accident.
At only 24 years old, Fernandez had everything to live for. He was at the best of his career and nothing was impossible.
Fernandez was called one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball.
Before playing for the Miami Marlins, Fernandez tried immigrating from Cuba three times until finally making it here at the age of 15 with his mother and making a life for himself in the United States.
In an interview he had with ABC News, Fernandez accredited his passion for baseball to his grandmother, who was one of his biggest supporters with his mother. He was fortunate enough to have the network bring his grandmother, whom he thought he would never see again, to see him pitch for the first time as a member of the Miami Marlins.
Curt Anderson from ABC News reported that on Monday Sept. 26, the Miami Marlins team painted Fernandez’s jersey number on the ballpark before the game began and asked for a moment of silence, celebrating the man Fernandez was and how important he was as a teammate and friend to all of them.
Fans from all over also set up a memorial in honor of Fernandez to pay their respects and demonstrate their love for the fallen baseball player.
Just thinking about someone close to my age dying is unsettling because it’s not fair. No one that young should die the way Fernandez did. When a young person dies, it offers a new perspective to settle in and makes you think of the things you haven’t been able to enjoy, or take part in because of other inconveniences — some of which might not even be that important.
Not too many people realize that time is never stopping, and we are never sure when our time will come. We must enjoy everything that is given to us while we can.
