During a regular meeting in FIU’s Geek Culture club, the conversation can range from the wildly popular app Pokémon GO to Netflix’s TV series Stranger Things to then plans for upcoming events, says Manuel Paiz, the club’s treasurer.
The GCC offers students from all walks of life –and all types of nerdom– a platform to come together and share their interests with other like-minded geeks.
Nadine Matas, an English major in her senior year and president of the GCC, said the club aims to provide a space for people to open up about topics for which they’d normally be uncomfortable doing so.
“[The club is] a community where a lot of people could share their different varied interests in the ‘geek realm’… Anything that varies between comics, manga, anime, … TV shows, movies. We have an interest for everything,” said Matas.
Club meetings usually occur on the Modesto Maidique Campus campus in Deuxieme Maison, room 190 on Wednesday nights starting at 7:30 p.m. Club members come together to plan events for the FIU community, such as the upcoming Thanksgiving Luau on Nov. 18.
“I know a lot of people have come into it and been like ‘Oh I mean what do you guys do? Do you just play board games or get dressed up in costumes and go places or whatever?’ It’s not just that, it’s about everybody sharing,” said Matas.
The club’s events range from pajama parties and karaoke nights to conventions and it creates a space for students to bond over common interests.
“People think we’re just kind of weird, in a sense. I guess our tastes don’t seem ordinary to people, but you know, everybody likes different things,” said Matas.
The Geek Culture Club brings together students discuss what it is that makes them proud to be geeky.
Stay nerdy, my friends.
