As the 2017 NFL Draft approaches, hopeful prospects compete against one another to showcase their abilities to scouts. FIU tight end Jonnu Smith is among the 3,500 eligible players who could potentially become drafted.
While at the University, Smith positioned himself to become a highly scouted prospect. His career was filled with defining moments, such as a three-receiving touchdown game against Middle Tennessee State University back in November 2014, and a domination of Old Dominion in October 2015, with 10 receptions for 183 receiving yards.
In his final year as a Panther, Smith played in 11 games and caught 42 passes for 506 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Smith’s 18 career touchdowns finish third all-time for the University and fourth all-time in receptions with 178.
“Jonnu is one of the best players to put on a Golden Panthers jersey, I feel with all that he has accomplished he has a legitimate and probable chance of being drafted,” sophomore and business major Alex Orta said.
Smith aims to impress NFL scouts at the upcoming Reese’s Senior Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. CT. Being able to compete against other top-talented prospects could solidify him as a NFL draft choice, based on his performance will highly-influence his draft position.
Smith joins former Panther T.Y. Hilton as one of the only Panthers selected to participate in the Senior Bowl.
