The devil’s working hard, but Julian Casablancas is working harder. In 2016, not only did he sign both “The Strokes” and “The Growlers” under his own label Cult Records, they also released albums as well. Casablancas’ most commonly associated band The Strokes teased fans with their EP “Future Present Past”.
It contained three diverse songs that were in synch with the EP title, and one remix made by their drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Elements of futuristic 80’s rock, modern-day garage rock, and reminiscence of the early 2000’s New York sound everyone came to love were eloquently layered. It’s been confirmed that they are in the studio with the hopes to release a full album.
As for The Growlers, Casablancas himself produced the album “City Club”, and worked hands-on with the band. Because of this, there was a progressive touch to their “beach-goth” label and new life was given to the experimental elements incorporated in this album, which is currently on rotation at the station.
He also has another project “Julian Casablancas+the Voidz”, and while they haven’t released an album since 2014’s “Tyranny”, a hidden experimental rock gem, it’s also been rumored that an album is in the works.
When he isn’t working on albums, he’s playing them on his own monthly radio show, Culture Void. Streamed through SiriusXM, he premiered one of the EP songs “OBLIVIUS”, plays his all-time favorites, and goes through a spectrum of genres that stray away from what is expected from him and mainstream radio.
