The softball team traveled up from Fort Myers to Orlando for the Citrus Classic II, where the Panthers demolished Chattanooga 10-2 in five innings, pounded Mercer 16-5, bested Kansas 4-3, lost to Notre Dame 5-3, and beat Bryant 4-0. The team now stands at 15-6 for the season.

Although they didn’t score the first run, The FIU Panthers started off the tournament in hard-hitting fashion by garnering enough runs to end the game in just five innings, beating the 6-10 Chattanooga Lady Mocs 10-2 on Friday afternoon. Junior center Kasandra Castle scored two runs on three hits, including three RBI, a double, two stolen bases and a putout IN three at-bats. Sophomore centerfielder Jackie Schoff scored three runs, two hits, a double, a walk, two putouts in three at-bats.

The Panthers continued from where they started, beating the 9-10 Mercer Bears to a pulp, 16-5 later that Friday. The game included a variety of big-time plays by the Panthers, including a three-run homer by Dani Mowry in the third inning and plenty of doubles. Senior Ashley Leon scored three runs, two hits, two RBI, a double, a sacrifice hit and an assist in four at-bats.

The team received its fourth win in a row in a 4-3 victory over the 12-7 Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. After scoring the first two runs, FIU gave up three in a row to the Jayhawks before scoring two more to take hold of the lead for good. Senior first baseman Stephanie Texeira got a hit and scored a run, an RBI, a home run, a walk, six putouts and an assist.

The Panthers suffered their only loss of the tournament to the 8-8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-5. The Fighting Irish fought off a 3-1 deficit to the Panthers through the first six innings, scoring two runs in the seventh inning and another two in the eighth to secure their victory.

FIU Softball ended the Citrus Classic II with a 4-0 shutout win over the 1-9 Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers scored all four of their runs in the first two innings.

The next time the softball team takes the field will be back in Fort Myers on Tuesday afternoon against the Holy Cross Crusaders at noon and the Ball State Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. After that, they come back home to take on the 3-11 Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
