Captain of FIU’s Rugby club Alexandra Diaz is anticipating the club’s next tournament on April 13 in Orlando, and said the team is using Spring Break to prepare.

“We don’t want that many days off,” said the senior. “We have to stay focused on the goal.”

The club will be competing against the University of Miami, Georgia College and University of Florida. Diaz said that practices will resume during spring break, including a beach practice session.

For Diaz, Tropical 7s will give the new members experience for what is to come. And she said her mind set on one thing.

“I want to win,” Diaz said.

President of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club Rainer Farinas, a junior studying management information systems, said he sees an opportunity for improvement during spring break.

“The more you train, the better you get,” Farinas said. “Technique beats power, but experience beats technique.”

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club will be competing during April in two competitions.

The club will travel to Orlando for the North American Grappling Association(NAGA) on April 1. The next competition for the club, Newbreed, will be held in Miami on April 8.

President and founder of the Rock Climbing club Juan Riveros, an electrical engineer junior, is planning something special for this spring break. Riveros is set on taking his club to Red River Gorge, Kentucky, for a recreational trip.

“It’s the premier sport climbing destination in the Southeast,” Riveros said.

The trip will help his club prepare itself for regionals. Regionals are held in Melbourne, Florida, on April 1.

President of the Badminton club Keven Guan, who is working on his PhD in computer science, plans to continue practicing during spring break.

“All these type of sports require time and effort,” Guan said. “With time and effort you will improve.”

While the student body is taking a break from classes during spring break, various  FIU clubs will remain active, pursuing their goals during the competitive season.
