On March 28, 2017, BBC will be hosting their semi-annual career expo from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm in the Wolfe University Center Ballrooms.
“Firstly, [students should attend] to land your ideal job and or internship. Then to network,” Harold Clayton, assistant director of Career and Talent Development, wrote to Student Media. “Knowing that your network is your “net worth”, students should grasp the opportunity to meet with the over 120 professionals that is coming to Career EXPO and only to meet with FIU students. ”
Employers include the Miami Heat, Royal Caribbean Cruises, iHeartMedia, Village of Pinecrest Police Department and whet travel among many more.
Clayton believes all students should attend the career expo even if they’re not looking for a job or internship.
“The more opportunities that you have to meet employers and professionals face to face, it then allows you to become more comfortable and confident so when you are looking for the job or internship, you will know what to expect,” he wrote.
The event is open for all employers to attend, however, employers that are aligned with the majors and classes offered at BBC are the most targeted.
From 9:30 am – 11:00 am the career smart talks, a panel with professionals from varying industries giving job search insights and answering questions, will be held followed by the employer showcase and recruitment (career fair) from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm and an additional dose of career smart talks from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm.
Approximately one hundred recruiters from over fifty different companies will be attending and there will be over 15 business leaders and vice provost members there to provide career advising and mentorship for students interested in a variety of industries including medicine, marketing, business, communications and media, law, engineering and many more.
“This is a panel with professionals from varying industries giving job search insights and answering questions,” wrote Clayton. “During the Career Fair, industry leaders and business professionals will also be available to provide career advising and resume critiques. All student that attends will receive multiple services to start or enhance their professional journey.”
Career smart talks speakers include David Savir, the cofounder and CEO of Element Pointe Advisors, the founder of social impact group and diversity accelerator Digital Grass Michael Hall and world-renowned board-certified plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer aka Dr. Miami.
Students should be prepared with at least 20-30 resume copies, but are recommended to have it professionally critiqued at Resume Fest.
Additionally, Clayton says that students should come prepared with “their professional attire, positive attitude and approximately 25 copies of their resumes.”
“Whether you are a freshman, a sophomore, a junior, a senior, in graduate school or an alumnus, you should plan to arrive early and meet the recruiters and professionals that traveled from all over the country to meet and network with FIU’s brilliant and diverse talent – our students and alumni,” said Clayton.
