Veronica Rushton, a senior studying broadcast journalism started interning for an organization called Pretty Girls Sweat, which is a social media community of young women that focuses on providing encouraging fitness solutions for girls struggling with obesity.
Founded by Aeshia DeVore Branch, a social entrepreneur, born in Queens, NY, her message to empower girls to become health leaders in their communities has created a positive yet entertaining platform for young women everywhere.
The organization’s philosophy focuses on teamwork, connecting inner city and suburban teen girls with some of the nation’s most popular fitness enthusiasts.
“This program helps girls not only stay healthy physically, but is also gives them a taste of the journalism field performing such tasks as interviews, writing blog posts, and constructing freelance articles”, Rushton states.
With this being Rushton’s first internship, she was a bit overwhelmed with the workload but informed me that it wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle.
“It was a lot but I definitely learned a great deal. I spent much of my time researching different health and fitness procedures,” she said. “Even though it was only my first day, I definitely enjoyed it.”
In terms of her process of landing the internship, Rushton clarified that a little over a year ago, she had no idea of pursuing an internship with Pretty Girl Sweat, but she’s glad that she did.
“It’s weird, I was interviewing this girl who at the time interned for Pretty Girls Sweat, she told me all about it, so I applied…
When I got it, I realized instantly that it was something that I wanted to do”, Rushton said.
She later expressed that while it wasn’t a difficult process to get the position, students should “Have patience, because there are a lot of people who will not get back to you right away.”
“[Do your] research — make sure you know that background of the company that you plan on interning for because it definitely helps when it comes to asking follow up questions about a specific position,” she said.
“Don’t give up, it’s OK if you get a bunch of ‘No’s”, you have to just keep pushing yourself and you’ll eventually find the internship for you,” said Rushton.
Just a little over a year, Veronica produced her very own lifestyle blog entitled, “Love, Veronica: From Me to You, With Love”. Through her wide spectrum of content, she offers life skills to college students like herself struggle with day-to-day-issues.
“I started over a year ago. I talk about college life or anything that I’ve been through, I create posts that cater to audiences that are experiencing the same things that I’m experiencing. It’s my outlet of platform to help others”, Rushton stated.
Rushton emphasized her compassion to inspire others, especially those of the minority group.
“I want to be a TV producer, not necessarily for television but for film. I want to produce films within minority groups,” she said.
