The Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management alongside the College of Engineering and Computing have launched a new program for students interested in pursuing a Masters in Science in Data Science with a Specialization in Hospitality Data Analytics.

The idea behind the program, according to the Chaplin School’s website, was conceived at an intersection between the field of science and the field of hospitality.  This specific program, the website states, was born from a need in the hospitality industry for young professionals who are capable of handling new data technologies, accurately analyzing data trends and patterns, forecasting what those trends will mean for the future and implementing their findings into the service sector.

There is a growing need for this kind of specialization, according to Diann Newman, the associate dean of student services, as the technology and hospitality industry continue to integrate to give customers a more “convenient, personalized and individualized” experience.

“With the introduction of technology that tracks customers behavior, hospitality companies are able to gather many more data points that allow them to get to know their customers in a much deeper way than in the past,” Newman said.

Students also see the usefulness of this degree, as they recognize how helpful technology can be to a business.

“If they just try effective strategies. . . through something like proper social media or advertising, campaigns could greatly increase smaller businesses,” Jade Moten, a senior majoring in biological sciences, said.

Feliz Garcia, a senior majoring in engineering, also thinks this program will be useful, especially for people who want to run their own hotel. This type of skill, he said, would help them “adapt” their hotel to make it a more pleasant experience for customers, while also helping increase their income.

Students who want to participate in the program must have a Bachelors in either computer engineering, computer science or statistics/biostatistics.They will also have to complete a thirty-credit core requirement, featuring both an Introduction to Data Science class and a Data Science capstone.

Students with this specialization, according to the website, will be able to work in various different fields such as national or international tourism associations, analytics consulting or management for companies.

For more information about the program, students can visit hospitality.fiu.edu or contact an advisor at 305-919-4521 or at the Hospitality Management building RM 106.
