Maria Martinez Canas is a proud Cuban, raised in Puerto Rico where she discovered her passion for the art she produces today. She exhibited her work during a photo-based workshop hosted by the Frost Museum on Saturday, July 22. In front of an attentive audience, Canas demonstrated multiple forms of artwork, from printing and transferring black and white images to collages of magazine clippings. Among those in attendance were Jane Milman and Claudia Starosta, regular volunteers at events held at the Frost Museum. They decided to take advantage of the workshop and learn from Canas’ art. Canas’ photography, printed and transferred to other materials and combined with other elements, creates unique pieces. Even though Canas studied photography in Chicago and Philadelphia, she explained to the group that she learned most her skills on her own — inside her parent’s garage.
