The fall semester is upon us which means a whole new athletic season for students to enjoy is underway. International students from all over the world come to FIU and are fortunate enough to have a wide array of sports that they can get into throughout the school year.

When interviewing international students around campus, many of the students discussed how they feel FIU and the city of Miami offer numerous sports that are internationally popular.

“I used to be a soccer player in my own country and I like playing and watching the sport,” said Abdullah Alfailakawi, sophomore majoring in civil engineering. Alfailakawi, who is originally from Kuwait, was familiar about Miami FC and is looking forward to attending a game at some point this semester before the fall season ends.

Some international students have already attended a few games during their time at FIU. Faisal Alsurayhi, a sophomore who is originally from Saudi Arabia, has already been to a few Miami FC games this season and is eager to see the squad compete again.

“I would go there to see Alessandro Nesta, he is one of my favorite players and is a legend for AC Milan,” explained Alsurayhi. “Being able to see him in real life was an amazing experience and the main reason why I enjoy going to games.”

Incoming international students like junior Vinicius Mejia, usually prefer to attend games with their friends.

“I love sports and I would love to go see the baseball team when the season starts. I could definitely see myself going sometime this semester if I can get a group of friends to come as well,” explained Mejia, who is native from the Dominican Republic and is currently majoring in international business and marketing.

After polling numerous students, soccer was a common sport chosen among international students. However with the wide variety of sports and athletic clubs offered at FIU, international students are fortunate enough to be able to watch and support a team in which they have interest in.
