Women’s basketball guard aims to lead team to victory

Kristian Hudson was the best player for FIU women’s basketball team last year and she is now returning for what looks to be another big season for her. Aside from starting in all 29 games, Hudson led the team in multiple statistical categories including points (12.1), assists (4.3), steals (48), free throws (89), and total minutes played (36.9).

The FIU women’s basketball team is coming off a tough season where they finished 5-24 and lost 13 out of their last 14 games. The return of Hudson and a few other players such as Kiandre’a Pound and Alexis Gordon will most definitely help the team improve on last season’s record.

Hudson had a few words on what she focused on this offseason both on and off the court, as well as what the other players have been doing:

“I would say my leadership is something I always need to improve on, so reading books and talking with people I admire has helped. On the court, I would say my jump shot,” said Hudson. “I have to give credit to everyone who has returned. I think we have a good environment with a lot of healthy competition.”

With no seniors on the roster this year, Hudson is one of the only upperclassmen with previous experience, but doesn’t think that’s going to sway her confidence. In fact, she revels the situation.

“I don’t feel any pressure. I just think it’s a huge opportunity for me to improve upon my leadership for the younger players to grow into leaders themselves.”

In terms of expectations, Hudson is excited for what the team can bring over the course of the season. The new players have already impressed her with their energy and have already proven their willingness to do whatever it takes.

“Their eagerness and their hard work. Everything else can be taught, but if you come with the right attitude and heart, then the sky’s the limit.”

Hudson has a few personal goals including leading the conference in both assist to turnover ratio and free throw percentage; great goals that will surely help the team find success this season.

This team is very young, but that also means a lot of energy will be seen on the court. Hudson and the rest of the team are ready to take on this season head on.
