“Misha’s Cupcakes” is a Miami-celebrated cupcake shop that has expanded into a chain of stores over the last few years. Ask any Miamian and they will tell you how Misha’s cupcakes are sprinkled all over social media pages, such as Instagram and Facebook, for the delectable and varied cupcake offerings that are irresistible to many. Through ingenuity and dedication to the craft, Misha Kuryla-Gomez managed to grow a company that has become beloved in the South Florida community.
Now that same beloved store has opened at the FIU Modesto Maidique campus, a long-time dream of Kuryla-Gomez.
From working at the back of her house to then moving the business to a warehouse, Misha’s Cupcakes has enjoyed continued success. The mastermind behind the treats gained a reputation for herself, as someone who is as sweet as her cupcakes because of her first priority – her children.
Chloe Rodriguez, the manager of the newly-opened shop and an English major in her junior year at FIU, said that Misha’s kids sample everything first, even chipping in with their own ideas.
“They are definitely a factor in what flavors to make, like The Dirt Cup,” said Rodriguez. “It’s a kids option. It [has] chocolate with chocolate pudding, more chocolate and a little gummy worm.”
One day while listening to the radio with her daughter, Kuryla-Gomez came across a story about a shop in California selling a thousand cupcakes a day. It inspired her to start her own business from scratch. Within a year she sold over $50,000 worth of cupcakes. The ability to patiently reflect, said Kuryla-Gomez, seems to be the secret.
“She always keeps her calm,” said Rodriguez. “She’s always cool and collected, all the time.”
The shop’s first location was in Coral Gables. At a talk at FIU’s MMC last year, the baker and business owner said she has waited a long time to open shop at FIU, aiming to bring her Panther pride into her cupcakes.
To date, the new, on-campus flagship location serves over 300 people a day.
Flavors like the cinnamon roll, which has a vanilla-base baked with white chocolate into with a cinnamon roll and topped with cream cheese frosting, has been described by patrons as one of the best breakfast foods ever, according to Rodriguez.
“The cupcakes are top quality,” said Franchesca Aguirre, a freshman majoring in social work, who recently visited the store. “The cupcake melts in my mouth and the icing compliments it perfectly.
They also have flavors like cinnamon, sugar and nutella, so it’s exciting to try something new every visit. My favourite flavor is dulce de leche. Dulce de leche has always been my go-to candy as a child, so it’s pretty hard not to choose it over the other flavors.
Students also enjoy its new location because it means that they have easier access to the celebrated treats between classes.
“I like Misha’s cupcakes because they’ve got many different flavors,” said Barbara Carbonell, a freshman majoring in English. “The cupcakes can be huge, so I can eat a bunch of my favourite cupcake.”
Also offered at the store are brownies, cookies, cakes, cake-in-a-jars, cookie dough, bars and muffins, available with plenty of staple flavors like dulce de leche, coconut and s’mores.
