As a freshman, everyone has their expectations of college — sororities and fraternity recruitment or study groups — but probably the most anticipated of all are the pep rallies and spirited homecoming week.
Time and time again, I have been told that “BBC is the campus to be because it is calmer.” That much is true, even at times when it shouldn’t be, but as a freshman living on BBC, the enthusiasm for homecoming week seems to be little to none.
Word of mouth promotion is the perfect way to build excitement, but compared to MMC’s larger population, BBC’s smaller population greatly affects the reputation of homecoming week. If no one is talking about how exciting and fun the homecoming events will be then no one will want to go.
Freshman Saralie Salomon, an international relations major believes that living on MMC makes homecoming week more enjoyable because of the suspense of homecoming week’s events and everyone’s anticipation building right in front of you.
“You can really see the excitement and preparations for homecoming,” said Salomon. “I’m thrilled for everything that is going to happen.”
From Oct. 23 through Oct. 27, the Homecoming Committee has been doing giveaways at pop-up locations at MMC in promotion of homecoming week, but BBC Homecoming Committee’s primary promotion seems to be on Instagram.
Freshman Chad Maraj, a communications major, believes the lack of in-person promotion is to blame for apathetic feel at BBC.
“I would be more ready for the events for homecoming week if I knew what they were,” said Maraj. “I don’t see much [publicity] for the events happening at BBC during homecoming week so I don’t even know what is happening or when.”
BBC’s President of Homecoming Committee, Daniela Gutierrez Ehmid, thinks that the population difference between MMC and BBC allows the committee to focus on specific ways to engage with students.
“While BBC’s Homecoming reputation is just beginning to grow, each event [populations] differs from one another,” said Gutierrez Ehmid. “Both campuses are full of diversity, but even though we fall under the same umbrella, our student’s needs and wants differ slightly.”
Knowing the population and planning accordingly is important in order to have a successful and fun event. The contrast in population difference may be at fault for what seems to be an absence excitement at BBC’s homecoming.
With BBC having a small population, there isn’t a lot of people to talk about the homecoming events on campus. With no one talking about the events, the energy and excitement automatically starts off low. Without the Homecoming Committees’ in person promotion it is difficult to pick up the energy through a phone screen or a poster.
The amount of people at MMC causes energy to spread like wildfire. BBC students can see the excitement brewing at MMC. This causes the thoses students to be hyped for the events happening at MMC not BBC’s events.
No matter what the cause is, BBC’s community needs to step it up and have a roaring enthusiasm for homecoming just like MMC.
