October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and students at BBC helped raise awareness at the “Biddi Biddi Bom Bom for Breast Cancer” event on Oct. 4. Students at the event, hosted by SPC, wore bedazzled bras to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
Following the destruction of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in late September, SGA hosted a spirited afternoon of singing and dancing on Oct. 12. The event, a Hispanic Heritage Celebration dedicated to Puerto Rico, was intended to collect relief donations.
SGA-BBC hosted a Day on the Bay community service event on Oct. 14 for students and community members. Volunteers collected trash and removed invasive species from the mangrove area at BBC.
NBC-6 visited MMC on Oct. 18 as part of the station’s College Week. The FIU marching band, cheerleaders and Golden Dazzlers were on hand to show off their school spirit.
On Oct. 19, BSU hosted their annual Blackout FIU event at MMC and BBC. Students and faculty were encouraged to wear black and gather for group photos in order to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and people impacted by racism.
The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum celebrated the opening of a new exhibit on Oct. 21. The exhibit, “Reflections of the Americas: New Acquisitions from the Collection of Univision,” is comprised of serigraphs, paintings and mixed media works. The exhibition is open to the public through January 2019.
The Panthermonium: Rise of a Legend concert launched Homecoming week at MMC on Oct. 28. Tory Lanez, 21 Savage and Travis Porter took the stage before an audience of students at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

One of FIU’s most enduring traditions, the Trail of the Torch event was held at MMC and BBC on Oct. 30 and Nov. 2, respectively. The torch represents knowledge, service and opportunity. It is carried through campus by torchbearers nominated by faculty members.

Miami FC continued their regular season at Riccardo Silva Stadium.
Students at BBC attended the Cirque de Nuit event as part of the campus’ Homecoming programming on Oct. 30. A spooky circus theme, including clowns and a magician, were part of the attractions.
The FIU men’s soccer team finished the regular season unbeaten with an overall record of (11-0-4). By the end of the month, the Panthers were ranked No. 7 in the nation and preparing to compete in the Conference USA Championship tournament.
