Students can make time for a career and get good grades

Brea Jones/ Staff Writer

Making the right connections in college can be harder than expected. The average lecture class has about 30 people in it. The student right next to you could be the person that you are destined to start a business with. But how would you know if the only interaction you had with that person is when they pass you the attendance sheet?

Students are already restless trying to balance passing four to five classes, so our frustration is to be expected when parents are constantly asking us about our future career plan or what our next move is.

For most students, we have no idea. We are trying to take it one step at a time. We’re already just trying to pass our classes, so when are we supposed to make the time to be “worlds ahead”?

Students may not have the necessary time in order to start making our next move, but freshman year of college is the perfect time to make a career plan.

Students have a tendency to focus on what affects them most in the near future, and this means school and grades. It isn’t until the final stretches of junior and senior year that reality hits. It’s then that students realize they need a plan for the future.

Maria Saucedo, a senior majoring in biology, believes that students always need to have a plan in place when it comes to their career.

“I had an idea of what I wanted to do around freshman year, but it wasn’t until my junior was coming to an end that I made a set plan,” said Saucedo. “That’s when I realized I had to put my foot in the door. I started applying to a lot of hospitals and getting myself out there.”

Although it seems impossible, there is a way to balance school and start a career. FIU’s Career and Talent Development Department is the perfect way to get your foot in the door of your desired job. While providing help with writing a resume, mock interviews and more, this department really focuses on each student and their needs.

Replacing the old program, Panther JOBlink, with a new program called Handshake, the Career and Talent Development program has been able to help students begin planning out their career.

Handshake sets up a profile for each student. After entering the necessary information for the profile, students are able to make their profile visible to over 100,000 employers offering jobs and internships. Creating a profile can take about two hours. It’s easiness has been a huge success for students of all grade levels.

Handshake is very beneficial for students. Over 55,000 students use Handshake, according to the Career and Talent Development Program.

Most websites make it hard and only have information about jobs or information about internships. It’s rare to have everything together in one website. It’s also very easy to navigate.
