Spring break a time for crossing off your bucket list

Jacquelyn Hurtado/ Staff Writer

With spring break just around the corner, everyone is probably hoping to have the time of their lives, but let’s be honest, we’re all just going to sleep in until one in the afternoon and watch Netflix until our eyes fry off.

After two months of adapting to our new classes and figuring out how we survived last semester, spring break is our time to relax. We can sit back and be completely useless without worrying about how productive we have to be. But sleeping and relaxing shouldn’t be the only thing you accomplish in spring break.

Instead, you should take this opportunity to create a bucket list for yourself. It doesn’t have to be long or strict. You can create a short outline of things you’ve always wanted to do so that you can have the best experiences.

Often times, we go into spring break without any plans, but still hope for an exciting adventure. To avoid wasting your free week, it’s good to have a bucket list because whenever you’re bored of being lazy, you can simply turn to your list.

One item on your bucket list should be to try something new. When juggling with school, work and the little bit of social life we have left, it’s easy for us to fall back into routine. Our days become a constant repetition. Trying something new will give you the opportunity to break away from that routine and step out of your comfort zone.

If you’re an avid reader, you can also add binge-reading to your bucket list. And before you sigh, hear me out. In school, we always have to read textbooks, which will either put us to sleep or make us hate reading altogether. Use your spring break to read a romance novel or that sci-fi trilogy you never got the chance to pick up. You can even read “Harry Potter” for the hundredth time if you want. Reading for your own pleasure can give you the escape you need.

For all the adventurers out there, you can also add a road trip to your list. Even if a road trip is too expensive at the moment, you should always make it a habit to get out of the house. Take a trip with your friends to a nearby park, the beach or even your local grocery store — it will give you a change of scenery. Try to keep yourself moving and exploring because you never know what adventure you might stumble upon.

When making your bucket list, try to personalize it as much as you can. Your list can range from something as small as watching a movie to something as extraordinary as traveling to the other side of the world. Despite what items you might write on your list, make sure that they will make you happy. School is always going to be important, but sometimes, we just need to look up from the pile of assignments and remember what we love to do.

In the end, focusing too much on routine can get us feeling down and underwhelmed about our futures, but having a bucket list filled with exciting opportunities can be the lift we need to feel happy and motivated again.

And nothing makes us feel as motivated as crossing items off a list.
